Live Aid information

According to History.com (2020) on July 13, 1985, at Wembley Stadium in London, Prince Charles and Princess Diana officially opened Live Aid, a worldwide rock concert organised to raise money for the relief of famine-stricken Africans. They go on to say that the 16-hour "superconcert" was globally linked by satellite to more than a billion viewers in 110 nations. The website also explains that in a triumph of technology and good will, the event raised more than $125 million in famine relief for Africa. History also states that Live Aid was the brainchild of Bob Geldof and in 1984 he travelled to Ethiopia after hearing news reports of a horrific famine that had killed hundreds of thousands of Ethiopians and threatened to kill millions more. This inspired him to record a single to benefit Ethiopian famine relief. "Do They Know Its Christmas?" was performed by "Band Aid".  Oz for Africa, a benefit held in Sydney, was to have been part of the Live Aid simulcas...

My initial idea

In 2018, I watched the film Bohemian Rhapsody, having already been a Queen fan, I had a lot of interest in the ending scenes which portrayed Live Aid from Queen’s point of view.  Growing up I also listened to many of the other bands and artists which played on that day in 1985, therefore, I became interested in the event.  However, being born in 2004, my interest could only go as far as videos and accounts of the day. Listening to people who had spoken about the event got me thinking; would I ever be able to experience something similar?  My original plan was just to look into what Live Aid achieved but, while conducting my research, I developed my project into whether or not Live Aid would be able to take place again. Especially in a technological age, as shown by Geldof’s quote.  My initial idea for my EPQ is to explore the lasting effect and ask the question of whether or not it could happen again as a result of what it achieved. I will study documentaries, accoun...

Outline of my progress through the EPQ

June-   Initial research into chosen topic of Live Aid and the legacy in which it created. I was still slightly unsure of this topic so I focused mainly on the event itself to begin with. I plan to use the BBC 2 documentary 'Live Aid: Against All Odds' to gain more knowledge about the event and the lead up to it.  July-  I plan to use articles from newspapers and entertainment websites accounting the day itself and what happened. I have changed my main title of my EPQ and now it will focus more on question of whether or not Live Aid could happen again.   I found out about the acts of the day and how Geldof managed to recruit them, I also found out the achievements of the event, e.g. the amount raised.  September-   I plan to s tart looking into articles focused on how Live Aid was run, this means focusing on the venue and what possibly went wrong. I plan to link this to how these things would be avoided in the modern day. I found out quite a lot of in...
